During the week of June 18-24, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.

During the week of June 18-24, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 11; Kona, 9; Puna, 7; South Kohala, 2; and Hamakua, 1.

So far this year, there have been 678 DUI arrests compared to 703 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent.

There have been 699 major accidents so far this year compared to 661 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 27.3 percent.

Eleven of those fatalities have been due to impaired drivers, six related to drugs, three related to alcohol and two, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
